The work is an adept demonstration of Levinas's phenomenological method, in which he takes single moments of time and expands upon their existential and ontological attributes. The moments of time herein treated are: (1) the solitude of being prior to the intervention of the other, and (2) the confrontation with death as the first intervention of the other itself. Time and the Other begins with the solitude of existing, in which the existing being is all alone without any determinate mode of existing.
That is, our focus is on the ways in which those things that structure us (social law, language, the Unconscious, ideology) make us, or fail to make us, ethical—ethical in the sense of responsible for others and responsible to ourselves, ethical in the sense of being originally bound to each other in ways that cannot, or at least should not, be denied or ignored, ethical in the sense that, at our very core, we, as subjects, have commitments that we need to be aware of, that we need to nurture and cultivate, and that is it these commitments that make us who and what we are.
For an excellent discussion of the "Greek" and the "Hebrew" in Levinas, see Gibbs (1992), Chapter 7. 30 THE INTERVENTION OF THE OTHER the ethical subject, but rather a theory of ethical subjectivity that draws on each thinker, without reducing one to the other, and without sacrificing their differences; the two will be brought together in a fractured and fragmented vision that appeals alternatingly to their points of view, not only even, but also especially in their points of divergence and disagreement.
