He had started his law practice in 1836 after trying his hand as the owner of a general store, running and losing an election for the Illinois General Assembly, serving as a captain in the Illinois Militia and as the New Salem postmaster. After marriage, Lincoln settled into family life with Mary. First son, Robert, was born in 1843 and second son, Edwin, arrived in 1846. Another son, Willie, came along in 1850 and his fourth son, Thomas “Tad” Lincoln” was born in 1853.
