Muscles around his lower abdomen, pelvis, hips, and thighs adjusted to the weight and slowly he shifted from dragging the wooden device to lifting it and using it much as he had when his right lower leg was flesh and bone. Meanwhile, as his navy assignment took him to air stations and aerodromes, sympathetic pilots allowed him to fly as an observer.
In May 1916 de Seversky and a team of mechanics and pilots traveled by train from Petrograd to Sevastopol, accompanied by several dismantled M-9 flying boats. They were going to be shown to the military brass of both the Baltic and Black Sea Fleets. ” The M-9 climbed, dove, rolled, looped, and performed a chandelle in which the craft ascended and turned to change flight direction and gain altitude at the same time. The thrilling display of aerobatics was capped by absolute shock when it was discovered the craft had been piloted by the one-legged de Seversky.
