The Grand Prairie Natural Division that includes Funk’s Grove once hosted large numbers of bison, Blanding’s turtles, and Franklin’s ground squirrels, but the first is now locally extinct, and the other two are in danger of extinction. Critical avian species include the northern harrier, short-eared owl, Henslow’s sparrow, Nelson’s sharp-tailed sparrow, prairie warbler, woodcock, short-billed dowitchers, red-headed woodpecker, savanna sparrow, and dickcessel. Among reptiles native to the area are the ornate box turtle, western hognose snake, smooth green snake, and the state-endangered eastern massasauga rattlesnake.

Young saplings and shrubs are particularly vulnerable to overbrowsing by deer. In an effort to reduce the deer population, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources now allows hunting in the preserve during archery season only. With its combination of still pools and fast-moving currents over shallow, rocky areas, the lower Wabash River hosts a wide variety of fish, including carp, channel catfish, white bass, freshwater drum, sauger, golden redhorse, gravel chub, long-ear sunfish, rock bass, river chub, and mooneye.
